Divide the first term of the dividend \(12x^2\) by the first term of the divisor \(3x\) to get the first term of the quotient, which is \(4x\).
Multiply \(4x\) by the entire divisor \(3x - 2\) and subtract the result from the original dividend \(12x^2 + x - 4\).
Bring down the next term from the dividend to form a new polynomial and repeat the division process with the new polynomial.
Continue this process until the degree of the remainder is less than the degree of the divisor, and then state the quotient and the remainder.
