Ch. 6 Bones and Skeletal Tissues

Chapter 5, Problem 20

Mrs. Abbruzzo brought her 4-year-old daughter to the doctor, complaining that she didn't 'look right.' The child's forehead was enlarged, her rib cage was knobby, and her lower limbs were bent and deformed. X rays revealed very thick epiphyseal plates. Mrs. Abbruzzo was advised to increase dietary amounts of vitamin D and milk and to get the girl outside to play in the sun. Considering the child's signs and symptoms, what disease do you think she has? Explain the doctor's instructions.

Welcome back. Here's your next question. Which of the following is a bone disorder that commonly affects Children and is characterized by delayed growth, knocked knees, bowed legs and large joints, weak muscles and discomfort in the spine, pelvis and legs choice. A osteo Malaysia B, Cleft palate C microcephaly or D rickets. Well, we have two that are really easy to eliminate right here because we're asking a question about a disorder that affects things all over the body involving the bones and choice. B, Cleft palate and C microcephaly are limited to one area. Cleft palate being an opening in the hard palate and microcephaly when an infant has a head size, that's significantly smaller than average indicating an underdeveloped brain which obviously can lead to physical and cognitive disabilities. So B and C, we can eliminate right away as they are limited to one structure in the body. So we have Australasia and rickets. Well, these are essentially both uh weakening or softening of the bone caused by demineralization. So we'll put uh A and D are weakening and they can be result of vitamin D, calcium or phosphate deficiency. Vitamin D comes in because vitamin D is key crucial to the body, obtaining calcium and phosphate from the intestines or absorbing them and then depositing them in the bones. So, if vitamin D is deficient, the body can't access those resources of calcium and phosphate needed for maintaining strong bones. So they're essentially the same phenomenon. But rickets is what it's called. So choicey rickets when it occurs in Children and osteomalacia when it occurs in adults. So essentially the same phenomenon but rickets is specific to Children. So since our question does access about this condition in Children, our answer would be choice. D rickets and we can eliminate a osteomalacia even though it does correctly describe the symptoms that would be caused by this nutritional deficiency. So again, our answer here, but the bone disorder commonly affects Children and has all these effects listed in our question. Choice. D rickets. See you in the next video.
