NorthStar is an intensive, American English, integrated skills course. It incorporates critical thinking and academic skills with language development and engages students through authentic and compelling content. It is designed to prepare students for the demands of college level and university study.

There are two strands to NorthStar: Listening & Speaking, and Reading & Writing.

Component descriptions
Student Book	The Student Book is available as a book and digitally as an eBook. Listening & Speaking 8 units per level Focus on Topic: each unit begins with a speaking exercise with questions that draw students into the topic and initiate critical thinking, encouraging students to make a personal connection. Focus on Listening: a listening exercise with two contrasting and thought-provoking authentic listenings to stimulate students intellectually. A comprehension exercise, which can be supported using students’ notes, reinforces meaning and pronunciation. Explicit skill instruction and practice: step-by-step practice allows students to exercise critical thinking and analytical skills. Pronunciation and speaking skills sections expose students to the sounds and patterns of English and to functional language allowing them to express ideas at a higher level. Focus on Speaking: productive vocabulary targeted in the unit is reviewed and expanded on in a creative way. Grammar structure is practiced to prepare students for the final speaking test. Group Unit Project: a group unit project that further prepares students to engage in real-world activities. Unit projects incorporate online research to build students’ digital literacy skills. Reading & Writing 8 units per level Focus on Topic: each unit begins with a speaking exercise with questions that draw students into the topic and initiate critical thinking, encouraging students to make a personal connection. Focus on Reading – the unit leads with a Reading exercise with two thought-provoking texts to stimulate students. A comprehension exercise reinforces meaning and pronunciation. Students are encouraged to take notes on main ideas and details on both readings, helping them to more deeply understand the ideas presented. Explicit skill instruction and practice: step-by-step practice builds students’ critical thinking and analytical skills. Focus on Writing: students review and expand on the unit vocabulary, and practice grammar structures to prepare them for the final speaking test. A task-based approach to process writing: a final writing task gives students an opportunity to integrate the ideas, vocabulary, and grammar presented in the unit. Access to audio and video is available through the app and online in MyEnglishlab.
Student eBook	The digital version of the Student Book includes the same content as the print Student Book. In addition it has: Student Book audio Student Book video Assessments, including unit achievement tests Student self-assessments and formative assessments incorporate assessment for learning strategies tied to student learning outcomes.
Mobile Practice App	NorthStar uses the Pearson Practice English App to provide: Extra Grammar and Vocabulary exercises for each unit Student Book audio Student Book video
MyEnglishLab	MyEnglishLab provides online practice for students. Access MyEnglishLab via the Pearson English Portal. Every lesson in the Student Books has corresponding follow up activities in MyEnglishLab. Students use MyEnglishLab to access additional practice online, view videos, listen to audio, and receive instant feedback on their work. Teachers assign MyEnglishLab activities to reinforce the skills students learned in class and monitor progress through an online gradebook. The gradebook tracks students’ performance, and identifies their strengths and weaknesses, allowing teachers to tailor classes to the demands of the class or individuals. MyEnglishLab encourages students to analyse what they are doing rather than just guessing. The Pearson English Portal connects teachers, learners and world-class resources, enabling you to work together, anytime and anywhere.
